About this place
Fresh off the grill and arranged in a boat-shaped paper tray, the takoyaki here come without rich brown sauce, mayonnaise, green laver, or dried bonito flakes. Located along the road leading from Iwashimizu-hachimangu Station toward the Ichino-torii gate, Itchan prepares Kyoto-style takoyaki with a batter infused with primary bonito dashi. Bite through the lightly browned, aromatic exterior and you find a molten, creamy center rich with the refined flavor of dashi. Left uncovered by heavy condiments, the simple savor of the batter and the lingering depth of the stock take center stage.
Portions range from boxes of 6 pieces to 8, 10, or 12, making it easy to order a quick snack while strolling or a more substantial meal. Alongside the classic takoyaki, the menu features deep-fried takoyaki, while seasonal sweets and light bites round out the stand's neighborhood charm—from summer shaved ice flavors like strawberry, Uji matcha, and melon to starchy, thickened ankake broths in winter.
Marked by its red sign and a nostalgic Showa-era atmosphere, the shop offers table seating inside as well as benches out front. It is also known as a filming location for the movie My Tomorrow, Your Yesterday, with posters and autographs adorning the walls. Open primarily during the daytime on Saturdays and Sundays, it makes a convenient stop on the walk back from visiting Iwashimizu Hachimangu or exploring the surrounding historic roads.
